Why does MitoDisease not accept donations directly?
We act as a commercial organisation with donations from private groups. The advantages to this are numerous. Gaining status as a charity restricts the commercial activities one can engage in. As there are already charities working on the same problem we are, we felt it best to fund ourselves using means unavailable to other groups rather than to compete with them for funding by donation. We strongly support SENS and suggest anyone wishing to make a donation to mitochondrial research donate directly to them.

Why are there advertisements on this website?
Running a website costs money for hosting, domain registration, maintainence, etc. The advertisments on this site pay us per impression/click/sale and help to offset the cost involved in running a website leaving more money left over for the real nitty-gritty, like actually doing the science.

Does my blog have to be related to mitochondrial diseases?
No! The purposes of the blogs is to create links back to our main page and increase the number of ad exposures we can deliver which, in turn, increases the amount of money we have to play with. While a blog regarding mitochondrial diseases would be more than welcome, it is not necessary that your blog have this theme.

Why does MitoDisease support SENS - aren't they a little controversial?
Our staunch support of SENS is a direct result of arguably the most promising paper of all time relating to mitochondria disease where Marisol Corral-Debrinski demonstrated the actual recovery of mtDNA damaged cells by means of allotopic expression, which is the only proof of principle ever to have been deomstrated with regard to a cure for mitochondrial disease.

While it would be foolish to deny the controversy regarding SENS, it needn't be a worry. The primary controversy is surrounding Aubrey de Grey's optimism on the timescale of his project. The science itself - like all of science - is published in fully peer reviewed journals, and as such, is as repsectable as any other science.

Why can't I open video/sound/other multimedia file downloaded from your site?

Any multimedia we distribute is, where possible, in an open format rather than a propriety one. If you are a Windows user, your system may not automatically know which program to use to open the files. All mutlimedia on this site can, however, be opened with Windows Media Player (and most other media players), even if it has a strange file extension. Rather than double clicking the downloaded file, open it from Windows Media Players file menu.

The sites formatting is misplaced in my browser, why don't you fix it?

There are known issues with MitoDisease.org and Konquerer in non-maximised mode where the text wrap breaks. Unfortunately, the only way we've found to fix this breaks the site in internet explorer. Unfortunately, the latter is more popular, and we have to cater for the masses. Please consider either maximizing your browser window, or using a Gecko based browser instead.

The font is tiny on my screen, what do I do?

This issue has been cropping up for Linux users after installing KDE 4.1. The solution is two fold. Make sure you have the Bitstream Vera family set of fonts installed (Debian/Ubuntu users simply need to apt-get install ttf-bitsream-vera) and secondly, in your control center under "Appearance And Themes" click "Fonts" and select the "Force Fonts DPI" option, and set it to 96 DPI. This will fix the whole of KDE, not just this site.

The font is huge on my screen, what do I do?

Use another browser or fix your font config. This is a rare bug in Iceweasel, and is only experienced in Debian. See the Bug Report for more detail and some work arounds.
